Students benefit from workshops focused on college readiness, financial aid, and more
Fairfield, CA (July 24, 2026) – FSUSD students and educators attended the California Foster Youth Education Summit in Sacramento this past May. Part of a statewide effort to support foster youth in education, students had the opportunity to attend a summit in Sacramento to connect foster care youth across the state alongside educators, advocates, and community organizations.
This year's theme was “Imagine • Inspire • Innovate: Bridging Paths, Empowering Futures." The event focused on leadership development and educational empowerment; participants had the opportunity to engage in thought-provoking workshops focused on college readiness, financial aid, independent living, mental health, and educational rights, to name a few.
It was a memorable experience for the students in attendance. Not only were they able to connect with students who share similar experiences, but they were also able to hear from current college students who’d also been in foster care. One student commented, “I was amazed to learn that Sacramento State offers guaranteed admission for students experiencing homelessness or in foster care.” With this seed planted in the minds of our students across the state, there is an apparent increase in motivation for students to take advantage of the support systems in place for foster care youth.
“FSUSD is committed to guiding students within foster care through additional mentorship and educational opportunities,” said Superintendent Jennifer Sachs. “We are proud of our students and leaders who took part in this important summit.”
Representatives from Solano County’s Office of Education (SCOE) also attended and presented a session titled “More than Numbers: Leveraging Data and Partnerships to Spark Innovation for Improved Educational Outcomes for Students in Foster Care.” Their workshop featured a video highlighting FSUSD leaders and programs aimed at guiding students within the foster care system.
